Friday Wrap Up 08.17.2007

This week we talk a bit about Damages and Eureka and look forward to Psych and The Company over the weekend. On Damages, we learn a bit more about Katie and Greg in Tastes Like A Ho-Ho and, on Eureka, the town experiences shared dreaming in Noche de Suenos.

Damages

Tastes Like A Ho-Ho Is there a critic anywhere who doesn’t love this show? If there is, I haven’t found them. This show rocks and I can honestly say that Glen Close has made my top five list of actors with this one show. Seriously.

Close’s character, Patty Hewes, is a high-stakes attorney who will win at all costs. She has a soft side, or so we thought, with her son. Then we find out that it was her son that was leaving grenades in strategic places (a little prank to scare mom and step-dad) and she has him abducted by a group of men in a black van. Just the sort of thing a relationship between son and mom needs. And this is just a side note to the main story going on with Arthur Forbisher.

Of course, Damages has all the ingredients of a good legal drama and we hardly know what’s going on. The best part of dramas like this, for me, are the characters that we get to know as the story progresses. No one is without their flaws or hangups or beyond the greed of money and power. In shows like Law & Order, you know that the cops and the prosecutors are the good guys and the bad guy may not be the one you thought at first but you can be sure that there is a bad guy somewhere. In that regard, Damages is much more closer to reality than Law & Order even though the latter is supposed to be based on real events.

Eureka

Noche de Suenos A toxic waste spill appears to trigger an epidemic of shared dreaming on Eureka. Only in Eureka could this happen but it comes off believable when you find out that it was only because a psychologist was experimenting with harnessing brain power while everyone slept through wifi network that hooked everyone’s brains to the same mental network.

Let’s just say that the science on Eureka is a long shot but its not that long. On a a scale of 1-10 in terms of believability (1 = no way, 10 = with certainty), I’d put most shows in the range of 6 or 7. This one was closer to a 4.

But that’s not why we watch Eureka. We watch it because Sheriff Carter (Colin Ferguson) and the other characters on the show are outstanding and we can’t wait to see what will happen next. The shared dreams in this episode were great. Fargo and Jo are in a hilarious bit where Fargo is Zorro and he defeats Nathan Stark for Jo’s love. Then we find out it wasn’t Fargo’s dream but Jo’s.

Plus, Eureka reminds us of Northern Exposure, one of the best television series ever made.

Psych

Meat is Murder, But Murder is Also Murder In tonight’s episode of Psych, a chef is accused of murdering a critic. Shawn and Gus take on the case.

The Company

Third Night Coming up on Sunday. After being in Hungary for the revolt of 1956 and in Cuba for the failed Bay of Pigs invasion, Jack McAuliffe (Chris O’Donnell) is disillusioned and quits the Company. We have to wait till Sunday night to see if he comes back or not.
