The Nines

I’ve been hearing a lot of buzz about a new film set to release in Los Angeles and New York on August 31st called The Nines (official site: look for the nines). It’s a John August film (writer and director) and stars Ryan Reynolds, Hope Davis, and Melissa McCarthy. August wrote the screenplays for Big Fish, Corpse Bride, Go, and the Charlie’s Angels films. The Nines looks to be similar to Big Fish, has a similiarity to the television show Lost, and, according to /Film, trying to tell the storyline is giving away too much. You just have to see it.

The plot outline at IMDB says “a troubled actor, a television show runner, and an acclaimed videogame designer find their lives intertwining in mysterious and unsettling ways.” You might think they are talking about the three main characters but the film is really three films, or three concurrent storylines (I can’t really tell), with Ryan Reynolds playing each one of those characters mentioned in separate parts. As you might think, the number 9 figures prominently through out.

Peter Sciretta at /Film saw The Nines at the Sundance Film Festival and loved it. You can actually download the trailer from IGN and, going with the theme of nines, the first nine minutes of the film are available from /Film.
